In 2010, the Swedish Research Council-Research Infrastructure (VR-RFI) appointed our laboratory as a National Center for Mass Spectrometry Imaging (NCMSI) resource. This provided an opportunity to acquire and maintain top-of-the-line instrumentation, and to build up methodological continuity and institutional knowledge. External projects conducted in collaboration with the Center will directly benefit by being able to tap into this extensive know-how and apply it to specific problems. The NCMSI is currently staffed by a multidisciplinary team of scientists (mass spectrometrists, biochemists, chemists, and engineers) whose work is primarily conducted within the Center in the context of the MALDI-MSI program. The laboratory was evaluated in 2008 and was top-ranked at Uppsala University. He also received the highest possible ranking in the Uppsala University Scientific Review in 2011 (KoF11, Comprehensive Evaluation of Research at Uppsala University).
Per Andrén (Director) is an Associate Professor at the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Biosciences, and is the director of the National Center for Mass Spectrometry Imaging (NCMSI) infrastructure at Uppsala University. He received a Master in Science (Pharmacy) in 1984), Ph.D. (Psychiatry) in 1989 from Uppsala University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship (Analytical Chemistry) at the University of Texas Medical School, Houston, USA. Since 2010 he has held a 6-year Senior Research Position awarded by the Swedish Research Council – Medicine. He founded a mass spectrometry laboratory at the Uppsala University Biomedical Centre in 2003 as part of the University’s Strategic Renewal and established the first MALDI-MSI laboratory in Scandinavia. The laboratory is part of a European MSI Infrastructure supported by the Cooperation in Science and Technology framework (COST; Action BM1104; Mass Spectrometry Imaging: New Tools for Healthcare Research).

Anna earned her Ph.D. in 2008 and has more than 10 years’ experience from working with MALDI MSI. Her main focus is Drug Discovery and Development applications using MALDI-MSI, i.e., small molecule applications such as qualitative and quantitative measurements of administered drugs and neurotransmitters, but she has also experience with peptidomics applications using nano-liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.

Mohammadreza Shariatgorji earned his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry in 2010 from Stockholm University, Sweden. His main research focus has been to develop quantitative and qualitative MSI methods for analysis of biomolecules such as small molecule neurotransmitters specially those which are involved in Parkinson’s disease.

Patrik Källback earned his Ph.D. in Pharmacy 2017 from Uppsala University, Swedem. His main research focus has been to develop software for quantitation and evaluation of mass spectrometry imaging data. He received his Master of Science in Chemistry 1994 and has over 15 years’ experience in chemistry and biosciences from biotech industry focused at instrumentation development. He has published 9 original research articles and has 6 patents.

Theodosia Vallianatou is a Ph.D. student at the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Biosciences, Biomolecular Imaging & Proteomics, Uppsala University. She received a Degree of Pharmacy (2011) from the University of Athens and completed the Master’s Specialization Program “Pharmaceutical Analysis- Quality Control” (2013) at the same university. Her main area of research interest is the application of mass spectrometry imaging for probing drug penetration of and interactions with the blood-brain barrier.
